Murrayfield I started the match well taking a quick 5-0. At that point Steve had had impressive wins over Greg McDonnell and Colin Green, Howard had beaten Greg McDonnell for the first time in three years and scraped home against David Melrose in 5 sets and Blair Fowler, stepping in for Carsten, had had a convincing win over David Melrose. The course of the match started to turn at that point and it looked possible that Penicuik might repeat last year’s heroic recovery against Murrayfield II when they salvaged a draw after being 5-0 down.
Colin Green then beat Blair and the Penicuik pairing of Greg and Colin beat Howard and Steve. At 5-2 Steve faced Dave Melrose who was playing consistently and looking unusually composed and assured. With the risk of a win by Dave Melrose, with Blair still to play Greg and with Howard to play a possible decider the match was looking in the balance. Through a very tight match Steve kept his focus and ultimately took it in the 5th against Dave Melrose to give Murrayfield victory. In the last two games Greg McDonnell beat Blair and Howard beat Colin to wrap the match up 7-3.
