Team 5 began 2010 with a straightforward win: though their task was
easier than it might have been as EI were a player short. Roger was a
little rusty and was taken to 5 sets by John; though he closed out the
final end with comfort (11-4). Colin and Babu then played out a fine
match with Colin’s controlled offense taking him to a 2-0 lead (11-7,
11-6) before –and only after a very fine edge at match point down- Babu
launched a comeback. The EI skipper –assisted by a few more timely
edges- took the next 2 games by the tightest of margins (11-13, 10-12)
before Colin again found his rhythm with his loop (and also played a
spectacular left handed winner!) and took the 5th 11-7. Charlie played
a steady enough game to beat John in three quick games.
With the points now safe, Murrayfield could concentrate on improving their wins/losses ratio.
However, Roger and Colin were far from their best in the doubles and
–despite taking the 1st end 11-6-succumbed in 4 scrappy games. Colin
then played efficiently to beat John in three.
Despite a loose 3rd game, Charlie played with some semblance of fluency
and won in 4 against Babu. In the final match, Babu played an unusually
conservative game but Roger didn’t find any consistency with his loops
and lost in three (though he was unlucky to lose the 1st end 15-13)
match played: 13th Jan 2009, at Murrayfield.
