Team 6 produced a somewhat insipid performance but were strong enough to beat Edinburgh University III.
In the opening games Alex, Charlie and Ian all won in three. Despite struggling with the slidy floor Alex was too consistent for Andy (11-4, 11-5, 11-9). Charlie successfully countered Tony’s strong FHs and controlled the points well (11-4, 11-2, 11-9). Ian’s FH was strong and his service variations caused Mei to miss with her good FH hit (11-9, 11-7, 11-9). Alex and Charlie also secured straightforward wins against Tony and Mei respectively.
Ian and Andy then played out the best match of the evening: Andy taking the first two before Ian took the 3rd; before winning the final two epic ends. In the final end Ian was 0-5 down at the changeover and then 3-9 down but kept fighting and as things got tighter Andy became tentative. Despite a fault serve at 12-12, Ian finally took it 15-13 (7-11, 8-11, 11-4, 16-14, 15-13)
Alex and Charlie then played a truly wretched, error- strewn, game of doubles; somehow beating Mei and Andy in 4 (9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 12-10). The final set of matches were all three setters-but unfortunately Ian (perhaps affected by having to watch the poor doubles match), lost to Tony. Team 6 next play this Friday (home to HPO).
