Murrayfield VI

Team 6’s run of victories came to an end with a disappointing loss to a young and talented Penicuik side. All three Murrayfield players were below par and struggled to find any real fluency during the evening; but should still have managed to draw the match.
After taking an early 2-1 lead (Charlie beating Ian J, Ian R beating Gavin: both in 4 games), there then followed the two key (5-set) matches of the evening. First Charlie lost out to young Alexander Duff whose left-handed forehand proved decisive (and was given too many easy balls to attack). Then, crucially, Ian R lost to Ian Johnstone despite, at one point, holding a 2-0 and 6-2 advantage. Credit though to Ian Johnstone who played a number of fine shots in this game and throughout the evening.
This left Murrayfield 4-2 down.
But a fighting win for Charlie and Ian in the doubles, and Charlie’s swift win over Gavin gave Murrayfield a chance of a draw. However an inconsistent Ian lost to Alexander before Rowan lost his way against Ian after taking the 1st game.
