A historic night for Murrayfield VII! Winning their first match in over 2 years! There were grins all round for Murrayfield as they finally took a match against Edinburgh Uni 7-3. The score line suggests an easy victory, however it was not until the 9th match that William Petit secured victory with a very impressive performance against Octavian McEwen. William's side spin serve, followed by ferocious forehand smashes saw him win comfortably 3-0 and secure victory. The match had started well for Murrayfield with comfortable victories for Gerome Romey and Mark Davidson, both winning 3-0 against Ross Gibson and Octavian. However it became apparent that their strongest player was Simon Cohen who was playing third position for Edinburgh Uni IV as he beat William convincingly. Simon played an impressive percentage game, with pace and accuracy. He was able to pick out shots on his forehand at all angles. Gerome played a consistent steady attacking match against Octavian who found it difficult to cope with an in form Gerome. Gerome's service was wayward on occasion but Octavian was unable to capitalize and Gerome took the match 3-0. William won against Ross Gibson who had previously lost to Mark Davidson. So it was 4-2 going into the doubles with Murrayfield knowing a victory would secure at least a point. It did not look good when they lost 6-11 in the first but after Gerome and Mark found their rhythm and consistency they took the match 3-2. This set up William to finish the match of calmly, despite the pressure of Murrayfield’s first victory since Season 05/06 on his shoulders. So a victory for Murrayfield reward for William and Gerome's hard work on the practice tables this season and Mark's staying power over the years. Hopefully this can be a platform from which Murrayfield VII can build.
Well done Lads!!!!! :)
